Divine Realty Shri Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj
Divine Reality offers fascinating and
insightful glimpses in the life of a great saint, Shri Baba Neeb Karori
Maharaj (introduced to the west by Ram Dass as Neem Karoli Baba or Baba or
'Maharaj ji') "I am like the Wind, No one can hold me, I belong to everyone, No one can own me" -from the Editors Note Baba nurtured the concept of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam (the world as one family). He gathered devotees from all over the world, young and old, men and women, of all castes, creeds, and nationalities, as one large family. He himself was the respected elder. His blood relations merged within this world-wide large family. Baba treated all equally........Baba often spoke to the assembly of his devotees,” All are born into this world with natural wisdom, and God is the great giver of this wisdom." In reality, the truth is, who could teach him and teach him what? He knew everything and was endowed with spiritual powers from birth. It is said that when he was just a child, he told his family that there would be burglars in the house that night. Taking it to be a child's imagination, no one heeded this warning. But his words turned out to be true, as burglars broke into the house that very night. Baba led a simple life and he was always concerned for the welfare of others. He would be seen solving the problems of ordinary people who did not even know him....The very embodiment of Compassion and Grace Baba was a benevolent father to all. He did not discriminate. He went to people himself and redeemed them by his grace; he helped spiritual aspirants to progress in their paths. He looked after many, providing..... Education...matrimonial alliances.... children for the childless..... Protected people from impeding calamities....and on certain occasions even brought the dead back to life. His acts were beyond comprehension, they puzzled the human mind. In short, nothing was impossible for him. Baba was unique. ........Baba left the mortal world... on the 11th of September 1973...... The lilas emanating from His celestial body still continue uninterrupted. People experience His Grace continuously even after his Maha Samadhi. He is a divine being and is above life and death. -from the Introduction Divine Reality Story 289 FAREWELL TO SWAMIJI A Swami, wearing silken robes, was going to Kathgodam by car, via Kianchi. He stopped at Kainchi Ashram and went in to meet Baba. Baba received him cordially and, giving him a seat by his side, made him have food. After a long, pleasant conversation, Baba bade him farewell with tears in his eyes. Baba gratified the Swami who was delighted at Baba's affectionate behavior. The Swami got into the car and was driven away. After Swamiji had gone, a devotee wanted to know the reason for Baba's exceptional behavior towards him. Baba said, "His time was up. I sent him off with love." The Swami could hardly have been traveling an hour en route to Kathgodam, when he suddenly had a heart attack and died. Story 87 A SAINT PASSES AWAY Maharaj was at the Haldwani Furniture Mart, with one of his devotees, Puran Chandra Joshi. He tells us that while talking to others, Baba became absorbed in some deep thought and remained silent in that mood for some time. Then he said faintly, "Puran, give a spoonful of water to drink. He is in agony." Joshi could not understand what the matter was, but nevertheless he poured two spoonfuls of water into Baba's mouth. After some time, two tears fell from his eyes and Baba said to Puran Chandra, "Raman is no more. India has lost a great Saint today." This incident occurred on the day that Maharishi Raman left his body in Arunachal. Story 68 ON THE PATH TO GOD Late one evening, Sri Ma and Sri Jivanti Ma and some other women devotees arrived for Baba's darshan in Kianchi (Ashram). Baba was not there. He had gone to Bhumiadhar. There were no busses at the time to return to Nainital. However, Sri Ma and Sri Jivanti Ma decided to go to Bhumiadhar. They did not take prasad (dinner) at the (Kianchi)Ashram as both mothers only ate after having Maharaji ji's darshan. They decided to walk the twelve kilometers to Bhumiadar in the darkness of the night on that lonely deserted road. As they started on their way, a black dog appeared out of the darkness and accompanied them, as if he were there for their protection. When they arrived at Bhumiador at midnight, Sri Ma thought of giving the dog some food. Almost in an instant, the dog had disappeared and could not be found anywhere. Even before Sri Ma had arrived, Maharaj ji had asked Brahmachari ji to prepare food for them. Brahmachari ji waited outside the Temple to greet them. As soon as they arrived, they had Maharaj ji's darshan. He praised them for their devout fervor and said," When you have started on the path to god, proceed, do not stop. He will take care of you." He then asked them to go and take prasad.
